American Bird Grasshopper sitting on a leaf

American Bird Grasshopper

The American Bird Grasshopper is native to North America, where it occurs in the eastern United States, Mexico, and the Bahamas. Occasional, localized outbreaks of this grasshopper occur, and it is often referred to as a locust, though it lacks the true swarming form of its congener, the desert locust. The adult male of the species is up to 4.5 cm long, and the adult female may reach 5.5 cm. The body of the adult is generally yellow brown in color and the wings are pale with large brown spots.
